Wolfgang's Daddy, Leopold Mozart

Published November 14, 2006 | By Tel

November 14, 1719.  Leopold Mozart, German-Austrian composer and father of wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was born in Augsburg.

Johann Georg Leopold Mozart (November 14, 1719 – May 28, 1787) was a composer, violinist and music teacher. He was born in the city of Augsburg (now in Germany), and was legally a citizen of the Diocese of Salzburg, Austria, but spent much of his time in Vienna.  He is best known today for being the father and teacher of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as well as writing the well-known book, Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule, but was a well-known figure himself in his own time.

Leopold Mozart was the son of a bookbinder. He studied theology at Salzburg University and did quite well until his expulsion in 1739. He then became more interested in music, becoming a violinist and valet to one of the university’s canons, Count Thurn and Taxis,  in 1740. In 1747 he married Anna Maria Pertl, who bore him seven children, although only two of them survived: Maria Anna Wallburga Ignatia (called “Nannerl”) and Johannes Chysostomous Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart(He changed his name to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart later on in life). In 1756, the same year as Wolfgang’s birth, Leopold wrote his Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule, a comprehensive treatise on violin playing. Today it is one of the main sources on performance practice in the 18th century. He devoted much of his later life to developing and supporting the talents of his two surviving children, most especially to dear Wolfgang, at the expense of his own work.

Fairfield Resorts

Published November 13, 2006 | By Tel

Here’s a post to my classical music friends and visitors interested with resorts and timeshares.

From a single Arkansas location in 1966, to today’s vast network of resorts, travel services and member privileges, Fairfield Resorts has been pivotal to the growth of timeshare in the United States. Headquartered in Orlando, Florida with 9000 employees nationwide, the company’s exceptional development standards, innovative products and unmatched hospitality expertise have all helped position Fairfield as the timeshare brand more families trust than any other. In 1966, Fairfield began as a land development company selling subdivided lots, whole ownership condos and custom-built homes in large master-planned communities such as Fairfield Bay, Fairfield Sapphire Valley and Fairfield Glade. Lot and home sales in these and other locations continue to this day.

As the timeshare concept took hold in the United States in 1979, Fairfield began selling FairShare — a deeded ownership interest that provided an annual resort vacation at a specific location during a specific time period each year. FairShare owners could “exchange” these preset locations and dates through Fairfield’s internal exchange program, also known as FAX (FairShare® Exchange of Fairfield Resorts, Inc.). While owners could visit other Fairfield resorts through FAX or non-affiliated resorts with the help of timeshare exchange companies like RCI (Resort Condominiums International), most remained locked in to a specific annual vacation week, also known as fixed-week timeshare.

It was becoming apparent that people needed more flexibility with their time off — in their vacation length, their choices of locations, when they traveled, and even the size of the unit they stayed in. So in 1991, the company forever changed the face of the timeshare industry by introducing FairShare Plus®, a revolutionary concept of points-based exchange. FairShare Plus offered consumers substantially greater flexibility through a yearly allotment of points that could be “spent” in increments for custom-sized accommodations at any time of the year and for varying lengths of stay. Today, FairShare Plus is the third largest timeshare exchange network in the world (behind RCI and Interval International), and members can use their points both for resort stays and a wide variety of travel/leisure products including airfare, cruises, accommodations and specialized leisure activities and attractions.

Fairfield Resorts has introduced more families to timeshare than any other company in the world. Today, over half a million families enjoy the Fairfield lifestyle, vacationing annually at one of more than 70 world-class resorts in 21 states and U.S. territories — representing 9,000-plus timeshare condominiums. From tropical beaches to pure Colorado powder to golf and golden sands, Fairfield Resorts offers a huge variety of quality vacation experiences. The company’s resorts are located in the most desirable destinations and rate among the highest worldwide in quality. Currently, over 80% of all Fairfield resorts have been awarded a “Gold Crown” or “Resort of International Distinction” ranking by RCI, an elite honor only the top 10% of timeshare properties throughout the world have earned.

Alexander Borodin

Published November 12, 2006 | By Tel

November 12, 1833.  Russian composer Alexander Borodin was born in St. Petersburg.  He was an illegitimate son of a Russian prince and member of the famous group known as the “Mighty Five” in his time.

He earned a doctorate in chemistry, and spent most of his career in scientific endeavours.

Borodin’s fame outside the Russian Empire was made possible during his lifetime by Franz Liszt, who arranged a performance of the first symphony in Germany and by Comtesse de Mercy-Argenteau in Belgium and France. His music is noted for its strong lyricism and rich harmonies. Along with some influences from Western composers, as a member of the “Mighty Five” his music exudes also an undeniably Russian flavor. His passionate music and unusual harmonies proved to have a lasting influence on the younger French composers Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.

The evocative characteristics of Borodin’s music made possible the adaptation of his compositions in the musical Kismet (1953), notably in the popular poignant song, “Stranger in Paradise”. In 1954, Borodin was posthumously awarded a Tony Award for this show.
