Mozart: A Cultural Biography by Robert Gutman
Robert W Gutman’s Mozart: A Cultural Biography
The book Mozart: A Cultural Biography written by Robert W Gutman is a well-researched fascinating portrait of the musical genius that is Mozart, arguably the greatest composer that ever lived.
Gutman takes us to the lives of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his devoted-to-him father Leopold taking us to the cultural, social, political and religious life of Europe that time. Mozart lived during the Enlightenment Era with brilliant philosophers and literary minds such as Voltaire, Wolfgang Goethe, Rousseau, among many others.
Among the music circle, the young Mozart became a friend of Hayden, and was contemporary from other musical talents including C.W. Gluck, C.P.E. Bach and J.C. Bach, Antonio Salieri, among others.
Leopold Mozart was a composer himself and an expert violinist who worked in Salzburg’s Orchestra Court. He is famous for his treatise on Violin technique. He focused his dedication and attention in teaching his children practically neglecting his own career. The family went on Grand Tours to expose especially young Mozart all over Europe. Along with this, Leopold tried hard to find suitable lucrative venues for the children to perform at. In all this, especially the young Mozart was under pressure to perform most especially resident musicians wherever they traveled.
In Mozart: A Cultural Biography, Gutman managed well to mold Mozart, developing him to an affectionate and witty young man, who in his genius and musical talents achieved immensely in so little time, a brief life of 35.

Review of Vienna Blood
Review: Vienna Blood by Frank Tallis
Reviewer: Liz Ringrose
I was recently recommended to read a novel by Frank Tallis: Vienna Blood.
The person said I should read it because I’m a Mozart fan. I didn’t see the significance of this as I began to read but it became clear as the plot developed. To say anymore than that would be giving too much away to anyone who wants to read it.
The novel is set in Vienna in 1902 when a series of grisly murders occurs in the city. The victims seem to be randomly chosen but nothing could be further from the truth. Trying to track down the monster is Detective Inspector Rheinhardt who frequently enlists the help of his friend Dr Max Liebermann, a disciple of Freud (who also appears in the book). Both men are very musical and meet frequently not only to discuss the baffling and increasingly gruesome case, but also to enjoy musical soirees at the piano.Woven into the story are the sickening threads of anti-semitism and racism among a certain group of people in Viennese society.
So where does Mozart come in? Well he’s there almost from the start although I didn’t pick up on it. He’s there all the way through in rather a clever way. But I can’t say more … you’ll just have to read it.
(Grateful thanks for this review Liz.)
